Hello AMCPress followers! Chris The Toyman is back with a con report from Anime Midwest 2013 in Chicago, IL at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.
This was the second largest convention that I have ever been to, with I believe close to 7,000 attendees. I was very impressed with the amount of cosplayers who attended the convention, and I was able to get some great photos.
Now on to the nitty gritty – The Good, The Bad & The Overall:
The Good – First off I have to give huge props to the staff for getting Steam Powered Giraffe as the band for this convention. Their concert was amazing! I had so much fun singing along with their songs and their performance was great. The cosplayers were also great at this convention, and allowed me to get some great photos. The panels I were able to go to were also a lot of fun. I got to meet some great people and made a few friends as well.
The Bad – The con was so big that I ended up waiting in line anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours just to get into panels. This was a huge problem for many attendees. Also there were panels that were moved around and never announced to the attendees. This caused me to miss several panels that I had originally planned to go to. The con was also understaffed, and caused many issues for attendees who were waiting for panels. Also, there was no free parking at this con, and I had to pay $13 a day for parking, which while being on a very tight budget, caused me to skip the last day of the con for financial reasons. Also, several voice actors cancelled last minute, which caused a few panels to be cancelled as well.
The Overall – Alright, so despite the great parts of this convention, there were too many negatives during this con that made me come to the conclusion that I will probably be skipping this convention next year. Between the under-staffing, the long panel wait times/lines, the lack of free parking for those on a budget, and guests cancelling last minute, it just wasn’t worth the 4 hour drive to Chicago for this convention.
Overall, I would have to give this convention a grade of: C-. Overall the con was good, but with the cons outweighing the pros, it just wasn’t worth it.
